During the month of April 2014, Smith Travel Research recorded a 70.4 percent occupancy rate for The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel, reflecting a 4.6 percent increase compared to 67.2 percent in April 2013. Buzzfeed.com recently listed two Lee County communities in its 11 Small Florida Towns You Need to Visit. The Lee County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recently voted to reappoint Robert Wells to the Lee County Tourist Development Council (TDC). First appointed to the TDC in 2006, Wells will continue for a third term on the board. Lee County hosted 23 amateur sports during the first quarter of 2014, driving 15,136 sports visitors to the county. During the three-month period from January through March 2014, amateur sports generated 18,377 hotel room nights sold and about $11.5 million in direct and indirect economic impact. TRANSPORTATION NEWS

During April 2014, 865,554 passengers traveled through Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) in Fort Myers, reflecting an increase of 6.1 percent compared to April 2013. Frontier Airlines will begin nonstop service between Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) on Sept. 9, 2014. Frontier will operate four weekly flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays between RSW and Dulles on a 168-seat Airbus A320 aircraft. Contact: Victoria B. The Lani Kai Island Resort on Fort Myers Beach is renovating 100 rooms and its restaurant overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The first of the renovated rooms are expected to be ready by mid-summer. Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village

The Shell Factory & Nature Park in North Fort Myers has added the new 600-foot, 30-mph Soaring Eagle Zip Line to its menu of family attractions.
